Pear & Walnut Scones with Pear Jam

Pear season has officially begun — and there’s no better way to celebrate it than with our delicious Pear & Walnut Scones served with a silky, fragrant, home-made pear jam and crushed walnuts  (or hazelnuts). Try it for yourself and enjoy this autumn season!

Makes: 6-8 scones

Ingredients:

For the Scones:

  • 1 pack of Sowan’s Gluten-free Scone Mix
  • ½ teaspoon of ground ginger
  • 110g of butter
  • 70 ml of natural yogurt
  • 2 small pears peeled and chopped
  • 50g of chopped walnuts
  • 2 medium eggs

For the Pear jam (makes approx. 4 medium jars):

  • 900g of peeled firm pears
  • 400g granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 200ml water
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract

For topping:

  •  Chopped walnuts, hazelnuts or any other nuts

Method:

  1.  Prepare the Sowan’s Scone Mix according to the packet instructions, adding the ginger, chopped pears, and walnuts.
  2.  Allow the scones to cool until ready to serve.
  3. For the pear jam, blend the peeled and cored pears in a food processor until smooth, or roughly chop them.
  4. Place the pear purée, sugar, lemon juice and water in a non-stick saucepan. Bring to a simmer.
  5. Simmer with the lid on for 20–25 minutes, stirring occasionally. If the mixture reduces too much, add a little more water.
  6. Stir in the vanilla extract and cook for another 5 minutes.
  7. Ladle the hot jam into hot, sterilised jars and seal with lids.
  8. Turn the jars upside down to form a seal.
  9. Once cool, store in the fridge. Unopened jars will keep for up to a month; once opened, use within a week.
  10. Cut the scones in half and serve with homemade pear jam.
